Spring Has Sprung!

Then, in his middle teen years, while hunting in the forest he stopped beside a stream and knelt down to take a drink. Thus, for the first time, in the water’s reflection he saw his face and immediately fell in love with his own image. But each time he tried to touch the image, it broke apart. He became so infatuated that he never left the stream, and eventually died of dehydration.

The beautiful flower we now call narcissus sprang up at the spot. And in fact, even though today most are cultivated by growers, we do sometimes find them growing wild beside woodland streams.

One other modern-day tribute to this beautiful young man is darker: His name is the source of the personality disorder called narcissism, an excessive level of self-admiration, especially in regard to physical attributes.
