ATTENTION WRITERS. Have an idea for a nonfiction book? Do you know what to do first?

What’s that you say? “Start writing”?

Wrong answer. First you need to learn about book proposals.

I have developed an in-depth workshop on “How to Write a Proposal for a Nonfiction Book,” which I am presenting at several venues in the Northwest over the coming months. In two short hours I will do my best to explain what it has taken me 30 years to learn. Starting with this basic, unbreakable rule: With nonfiction, you don’t submit the entire book to a publisher; you submit a proposal.

And it had better be good.
