Save all the garden catalogs you can get your hands on. When it comes time to plan a new garden space, cut out the color photos of all the plants you are considering. On a blank sheet of paper, sketch out the general shape of the garden space and then arrange the photos on the sketch. Move the photos around until you get a combination you like. Of course you still have to think about things like sun exposure, existing trees and shrubs, and all that, but you will have a pretty good idea of how the plants will look next to each other.
