The Rest of the Story

Fred, one of the oldest sons, went in search of his father. He used a raft to navigate the Salmon River, perhaps thinking it would be faster. But the Salmon can be treacherous, especially in April when runoff is high, and Fred was thrown from the raft and drowned.

The search for Papa continued. More than a week later, his body was discovered next to a tree stump, a short distance from the main path he had traveled most of his adult life.
